Limerick's centre runs in a straight line along O'Connell Street, with the Georgian Quarter's terraces to the south and the medieval core around King John's Castle and St Mary's Cathedral to the north. In between, the Shannon and the Abbey River give you quays to walk along, so a first drink here can easily turn into a stroll by the water.
The city is smaller than Cork or Galway, and that works in your favour. Most bars worth suggesting are within ten minutes' walk of each other, and the main bus stops on Henry Street, Arthur's Quay and Sarsfield Street are never far away.
Weekday evenings are noticeably calmer than weekends, when O'Connell Street fills with groups. If you can, meet at the start of the week, or on a Saturday afternoon around the Milk Market when the city is busy in a gentler way.
Where to go in Limerick
O'Connell Street and the Georgian Quarter
The main street and the Georgian terraces around Pery Square and the People's Park. Bars, restaurants and the city gallery, all close together.
The Medieval Quarter
King John's Castle, St Mary's Cathedral and the streets around Nicholas Street, north of the city centre. Good for a daytime visit and a pub by the river.
George's Quay and the riverside
Riverside pubs facing the Shannon, a few minutes' walk from the castle. Lovely on a fine evening.
The Milk Market and Mungret Street
A covered market with traders, food stalls and live music at weekends, in the streets east of the centre.
Bedford Row and Thomas Street
Pedestrian shopping streets just off O'Connell Street, with cafes for a daytime first meeting.
Places for a first drink
Busy enough to feel relaxed, quiet enough to talk, and easy to leave. Check opening times on their own sites before you go.
- 01
The Copper Room
wine bar · O'Connell Street
A wine bar in old underground vaults beneath 100 O'Connell Street, with wine, port and cheese boards. It describes itself as a good spot for a first date, and the low lighting and small rooms back that up. Opens in the evening; you can book.
- 02
The Locke Bar
pub · George's Quay
An award-winning gastropub with a big outdoor area looking out over the Shannon. In good weather it's one of the nicest places in the city for an early drink; the traditional music sessions make it livelier later on.
- 03
The White House Bar
pub · City centre
It calls itself Limerick's oldest bar, established in 1812, and it has a history as a meeting place for local poets. A cocktail menu and a cosy downstairs bar make it a characterful but unpretentious first stop.
- 04
Mother Macs
traditional pub · High Street
A traditional pub on the corner of High Street and Upper Denmark Street, with a beer of the week, a whiskey of the month and a deliberately old-fashioned feel. It's the sort of place where people come to talk.
- 05
The Old Quarter
pub and cocktail bar · Little Ellen Street
Open since 1995 and one of the city's first cocktail bars, with cosy booths and tables you can book online. A booth gives you a bit of privacy without leaving a busy, public room.
- 06
Harry's on the River, Absolute Hotel
hotel bar and restaurant · Abbey River
The bar and restaurant of a city-centre hotel beside the Abbey River. Comfortable, well staffed and calmer than O'Connell Street at the weekend.
- 07
The Buttery
cafe and restaurant (daytime) · Bedford Row
A well-known brunch spot on Bedford Row, just off O'Connell Street. Breakfast or brunch is a relaxed first meeting, and the shopping streets outside make it easy to say goodbye or carry on walking.

40+
Dating in Limerick over 40
For a lot of people in their forties in Limerick, the best first date is an after-work glass of wine on O'Connell Street before the weekend crowds arrive. The Copper Room, in old vaults under number 100, is made for exactly that: small rooms, a cheese board to share and the chance to talk properly. If you'd rather a pub, Mother Macs on High Street keeps things traditional and unhurried.
When the weather is kind, a drink outside at The Locke Bar on George's Quay, with the Shannon in front of you, is about as relaxed as Limerick gets. Walk up past King John's Castle afterwards if the conversation is going well; it's a short, well-used route and you're never far from a bus stop or a taxi rank in the centre.

Dating in Limerick over 50
Over 50, the Georgian Quarter is a natural place to start. Limerick City Gallery of Art is in the Carnegie Building in the People's Park, and a look round an exhibition followed by a walk through the park gives you an easy, public first meeting in daylight. A Saturday morning at the Milk Market, with coffee from one of the stalls, works just as well.
In the evening, a play at the Belltable or the Lime Tree Theatre, or a concert at University Concert Hall, gives the date a shape and something to talk about over a drink. If you want somewhere comfortable to sit before or after, the bar at Harry's on the River in the Absolute Hotel is calmer than the pubs on O'Connell Street, and The White House Bar has a quieter, older-style charm.

Getting home
Limerick's city buses are run by Bus Éireann, with routes crossing the centre via stops such as Henry Street, Arthur's Quay and Sarsfield Street. TFI shows which routes run seven days a week and which don't run on Sundays, so look up your route and its last departure in the live TFI timetable before you head out.
Route 343, between Limerick city and Shannon Town and Shannon Airport, is listed by Transport for Ireland as a 24-hour bus service, which is useful if one of you lives in Co. Clare along that road.
From Colbert Station, TFI lists late-evening services on the Dublin Heuston, Limerick and Ennis line, and late-evening and night services between Limerick and Galway. Check the Irish Rail timetable on the day, as times vary by day of the week.
Taxis can be hailed in the street, picked up at a rank or booked ahead. Hackneys can only be pre-booked and the fare has to be agreed before the journey. All taxis must take cards as well as cash, with no extra charge for paying by card.
Staying safe in Limerick
- Open the free TFI Driver Check app before your taxi leaves: it confirms the driver is licensed and lets you forward the details to a friend.
- In an emergency, call 999 or 112 from any phone.
- The quays and the People's Park are pleasant in daylight but quieter at night. After a late drink, stay on O'Connell Street and the main bus and taxi routes.
- Weekend nights on O'Connell Street can get rowdy. Meet early, sit inside, and keep your drink and your phone with you.
- Let a friend know where you're going and who you're meeting, and plan your own way home before you set out.
